ReNew Athens builds interest fielding condo inquiries

The founders of a new nonprofit that will convert Athens apartments into condominiums for the working poor say they already are fielding calls from real estate agents and potential buyers.

Four or five people already have called state Rep. Doug McKillip or Athens Area Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Spencer Frye looking to buy one of the condos, they said. And several real estate agents have inquired about selling units to the new nonprofit, called ReNew Athens, they said.

McKillip, D-Athens, said he has been surprised by the positive response since announcing the initiative earlier this month. They officially rolled it out to the public Wednesday at McKillip's South Milledge Avenue law office.

"It's one of those things, you light the fuse and don't know whether it's going to explode," McKillip said.

ReNew Athens will apply Habitat for Humanity's affordable housing model to multifamily unit
